
Happy New Year! We hope you have an outstanding new year chock-full of exciting cultural experiences! Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer Newsletter! The Book of the Month which we read for the Worldview Project Book Club, Diary of a Bookseller by Sean Bythell. And to keep your ears and soul happy, our International Music Selection is Zan by Liraz. Now, on to Local Events . . . The SoundON Festival got underway yesterday and continues at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library with performances today and tomorrow. Friday (today), Le Lycée Français de San Diego will screen the French film Confessions with English subtitles. Benise, the "Prince of Spanish Guitar," will perform at the Balboa Theatre. Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations opened at the Civic Theatre and they will have performances through Sunday. Saturday at Border X Brew Pub, a Juan Gabriel Tribute Celebration will honor with music and spirits the late great Mexican singer, songwriter, and actor. There will be a Celebration of Ireland Concert
at the International Cottages in Balboa Park featuring "traditional toe-tapping tunes, songs in Gaelic and English, folklore, history, and Irish poetry." Should be good craic indeed! Capping off next Saturday, there will be a Salsa & Bachata New Year's Party at the resplendent Tango del Rey. Sunday the La Jolla Women's Club will host Le Salon De Musiques: Franz Schubert which they promise will be "a concert experience unlike any other." Tuesday, the House of Turkiye (at the International Cottages) will host their Exploring Turkish Culture & Food event. Also next Tuesday at Balboa Park there will be a Benefit Concert for Ukraine. Next Thursday, the 5-day Borrego Springs Film Festival will get underway. A great excuse to visit the desert. The musical Blues in the Night opens at the North County Rep. They will have performances until early February. Next Friday, a 3-day Salsa Festival will start at Marriott Mission Valley. Next Saturday and Sunday (as well as the following Saturday and Sunday), Hamlet will be performed at the Lawrence Family JCC. Next Saturday, there will be a Karen Music Festival at the City Heights Performance Annex. Next Sunday, the 41st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade will take place on Harbor Drive. There will be a Colombian Food Event at Too Sabrozo Deli.
